About this granny square basket.

I love experimenting with different materials for crocheting. A few years back, I bought polyester cord aka bag yarn, as a substitute for cotton for a bag design. It worked out well. However, I find it a bit tough to work with as I prefer yarns in the DK range. During a spring cleaning, I decided it was time to make use of the 2 spools.

The two spools of bag yarn I used

Enter the Soothing Sands Granny Square Basket. This was the perfect solution for these spools because I’m always making granny squares and get tired of carrying them around in paper bags. Secondly, the materials are perfect as they made a really firm crochet basket.

This granny square basket is named after the beautiful shades of the polyester cord. One is a nice cream colour while the other is a lovely beige with specs of gold embedded in it. Both bring to mind lovely sandy beaches at sunset and thus the Soothing Sands Basket was born.

Instructions:

This granny square basket is made using 2 granny square types:

a.) Bottom piece- First off, start with the bottom piece. Make 5 rounds of the solid granny square. I used the speckled beige for this.

b.) Side Pieces- Next, Make 4 pieces of the diamond granny square alternating between cream and speckled beige yarn.

Joining the granny square basket pieces:

  • First off, lay out your crochet granny squares as shown in the picture below then use sc in blo to join the bottom piece to the side pieces. Fasten off.
Join in back loop only
Sc around the bottom
Join the sides
  • Second, sc the sides together as well still in blo. You’ll now have a granny square basket. But we still need to spruce it up a bit.

  1. Join yarn to the 3rd corner dc on your right. In blo, sc in each st across with sc2tog in the corners. Join to first st with a sl st [88 sc]
